During Advent Good Shepherd will focus on the spiritual practice of PRAY. Pray is a continuation of the Way of Love, a set of practices that our parish has committed to explore during the 2019-2020 formation year. Please see below a number of offerings available to all during Advent:
Advent Wreath Making and Parish Brunch
Sunday, December 1 | 11:30am – 12:30pm (Windsor Campus)
Sunday, December 1 | 12:00pm – 1:00pm (The Hill)
We’ll celebrate the start of Advent with a parish brunch, during which we’ll make Advent wreaths and light the first candle together. Everything for your wreath will be provided for you.
Begins Sunday, December 1 (Both Campuses)
Grab a friend and come share some happiness this holiday season by adopting a family from the Good Shepherd Giving Tree! The tree will be on display Sunday, December 1, after the 10:30a services. All gifts are due back by December 13.
Begins Sunday, December 1 (Both Campuses)
Beginning December 1 we will provide $100 to be given away by any parishioner that wants to participate in Christmas Benevolence. We hope that this gift will go directly to a person or family in need, extending Good Shepherd’s reach in the Austin community and giving our parishioners an opportunity to reach beyond themselves in a personal way this season.
An Evening with St. Nicholas
Wednesday, December 4 | 5:00pm – 7:00pm
Join us for an enchanting evening of music and inspirational readings to prepare our hearts for the Christmas season. We’ll sing some Christmas classics and some other favorites. Children are invited to attend in their comfiest PJs and be prepared to meet St. Nicholas after the service. The evening begins at 5:00pm. Activities will wrap up at 6:00pm when dinner is served.
Bishop’s Visit and Confirmation
Sunday, December 15 | 11:00am (The Hill)
Bishop Kai Ryan will visit The Hill for worship and confirmations this season.
Rise Against Hunger
Sunday, December 22 | 10:30am worship and 11:30am pack (Both Campuses)
As a parish we’ll pack 45,000 meals for those who need them most. Both campuses will host food packs following worship. This morning our 10:30am Windsor worship services feature Ray Buchanan. He will share his passion for ending world hunger and will discuss our call as Christians to connect our faith and our relationship with food. Ray will then join us for the pack.
Ongoing and Self-guided Opportunities
Advent Prayer Garden
Monday – Friday | 8:00am – 3:00pm (Windsor Campus)
We will transform Formation Room 209 (located on the second floor of the Education Center) into an Advent Prayer Garden. Visitors can come at their leisure to experience a variety of prayer models. This is a self-guided and self-paced opportunity designed to provide spiritual nourishment for one’s soul.
Week-daily Morning Prayer
Monday – Friday | 7:00am (Windsor Campus)
Each weekday morning during Advent, beginning Monday, December 2, we will gather at 7:00am on our Windsor Campus for Week-daily Morning Prayer. This brief service of psalms, scripture readings and prayers from The Book of Common Prayer is a treasure of the Anglican liturgical tradition and is ideal for anyone seeking to enrich their daily prayer practice or live more deeply into the Advent season.
One Book, One Parish: With Open Hands by Henri Nouwen
We invite member from both Good Shepherd communities to read this book during Advent. With Open Hands, Henri Nouwen’s first book on spirituality and a treasured introduction to prayer, has been a perennial favorite for over thirty years because it gently encourages an open, trusting stance toward God and offers insight to the components of prayer: silence, acceptance, hope, compassion, and prophetic criticism. Provocative questions invite reflection and self-awareness, while simple and beautiful prayers provide comfort, peace, and reassurance. With over half a million copies printed in seven languages, this spiritual classic has been reissued for a new generation with moving photography and a foreword by Sue Monk Kidd.
Wednesdays on Windsor: Advent Contemplative Prayer
Wednesdays | 6:00pm (Windsor Campus)
Contemplative Prayer will be offered during Advent as part of our Wednesdays on Windsor program.
