“While the possibilities before us may not seem as consequential as those of the Christ, consider the modesty of that first temptation Jesus faces: bread…only a single bite when he was hungry. Before there is the promise of splendor, there is only this morsel. Similarly, we cannot always appraise accurately the consequence of our actions in the moment of a decision: turning left, or turning right; choosing to continue this relationship, or to pursue that one. Likewise, Jesus’ fundamental temptation – choosing a life other than the one God intends – is the very same seduction we confront every day…”
