The Rev. Laurence Wainwright-Maks

Priest for Outreach

I was born in Georgia and grew up in Mississippi. I attended the University of Southern Mississippi where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Deaf Education. After graduation, I began teaching, both in the public schools in Mississippi and at the Louisiana School for the Deaf as an Elementary Ed Instructor. While I was in Baton Rouge, I discerned a call for ministry and went back to the Diocese of Mississippi to explore a call for Holy Orders. In between, I took a gap year and went to Alaska.

In 2014, I graduated from the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas where I received my Master of Divinity. I was called back to Mississippi to accept my first call to campus ministry, as a chaplain at Mississippi State University. I later moved to Rochester, NY to be the Missioner to the Deaf and Episcopal Chaplain at Rochester Institute of Technology and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

I grew up with my mother who was a nurse practitioner and my grandmother, along with my twin sister, Lauren.  Years ago, my sister answered a call to youth ministry and is currently the Director of Youth Ministry at Good Shepherd in Dallas, Texas. My mother and sister currently reside there.  My father was in the army until he retired and became an acupuncturist. He now resides in Alabama with my stepmother. I have four brothers who live in Georgia and Alabama and another sister who lives in Dublin, Ireland. In my spare time, I enjoy camping, disc golf, playing guitar, BBQ-ing, and Pub Trivia.

I am excited to serve at Good Shepherd. There is an energy at the Hill and at Windsor from people who seek to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world and in the community. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to share our gifts with one another, meet over some good meals, and a chance to develop new relationships with many of you as we share our story of God’s Love and work within our lives. I am glad to be here with you.
