“… Just as those words offer reassurance that not even death will end the power of our
fellowship, this morning’s appointment reiterates how God’s promises will be realized across our
mortal horizons: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Importantly, this is a
promise, and not a threat. That is, the “commandment” to which Jesus refers is the one he has
just delivered, namely that his friends would love one another in the model of his love. Jesus’
“if” reassures his disciples of faith’s uncomplicated, reciprocal formula: Loving me is enough!
For in loving one another, you express your love for me. Therefore, I am in you, and you are in
me, when we share a common love for one another….””
